Multiple water wells closed in Cambridge after jet fuel spill on 401

Multiple water wells have been closed in Cambridge after a tanker truck rolled over on the 401 and spilled jet fuel across the highway this weekend.

The truck was carrying 50,000 litres of jet fuel when it collided with a passenger vehicle around 1:40 a.m. Sunday.

Officials with the City of Cambridge said that the spilled fuel got into the Aberfoyle Creek and has made its way as far as Mill Creek.

Officials said a boom has been deployed in the Shade's Mill reservoir.

The City of Cambridge initially said five wells had been closed, but the Region of Waterloo later said only two wells were closed due to the spill. 

The City of Cambridge called the well closures a "precautionary measure."

City of Cambridge officials said there should not be an impact on water supply as a result of the closures and that drinking water is safe.

The affected wells serve the Shade's Mill water treatment plant.

City officials said Ontario's Ministry of the Environment are leading containment and cleanup efforts, and so far, there have been no confirmed reports of any impacts on wildlife.
