Kitchener installs 3 new bicycle repair stations

Kitchener cyclists in need of an emergency tune-up can get one at three different locations now that the city has installed three bike “fix-it” stations at Kitchener City Hall, the Kitchener Market and at the head of the Iron Horse Trail on Queen Street.

The fluorescent green stations each come equipped with an air pump, wrenches and tire irons.

For those who aren't so mechanically inclined, the stations each come with QR codes that when scanned with a smartphone provide basic instructions on how to repair a flat tire, adjust gears, brakes and remove a wheel.

“You can pretty much build a bike here,” said Michael White from Ziggy’s Cycle and Sport.

White advises cyclists who are just pulling their bikes out of storage after a long winter to make sure to test the brakes before pedalling away.

He also says if you use a helmet, make sure it isn’t more than four years old.
