Kitchener man posing as foreign currency investor arrested at Toronto Pearson Airport

Waterloo regional police arrested a 28-year-old Kitchener man at Toronto Pearson Airport on Monday. Police say the man was posing as foreign currency investor and convinced a woman to invest hundreds of thousands of dollars in a romance scam.

A 28-year-old Kitchener man was arrested at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday after police say he posed as a foreign currency investor and scammed a woman of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Waterloo regional police said the arrest stemmed from a report of a romance scam officers received in August 2023.

Police allege the man had established a romantic relationship with a female victim and convinced her to invest approximately $200,000 with him and support his lifestyle.

Waterloo Regional Police Service's commercial fraud unit and the Canadian Border Services Agency arrested the man at the airport and he was brought back to Waterloo region.

He was charged with fraud over $5,000, possession of stolen property over $5,000, money laundering, fail to register as a money services business and fail to comply with a release order.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact police.
