Kitchener council voted to expand the existing city operations yard on Battler Road to put in a new permanent snow disposal storage facility.

The facility, at 1585 Battler Road, was determined to be the most cost effective and environmentally sound option for the snow, out of six possible options.

Currently the city has three locations for snow disposal: Bramm Street, Graber Street and Ardelt Place. However, the lease on the Ardelt facility expires this coming July and the city says that Graber Street is for overflow snow.

Without a new facility at Battler Road, the city wouldn't even be able to handle a regular winter snow season, according to a release.

Because of increased truck traffic to and from the site, and noise on the site, the city will do a noise abatement study and look at solutions to reduce the noise.  The city will also put in berms and landscaping to reduce visual impact.

Construction on the Battler Road site will start in fall 2016.
