Man dead in shooting in Kitchener, hold and secure lifted at 6 schools

A 28-year-old man is dead and six schools were placed in hold and secure as police investigated a shooting in Kitchener, Ont., on Thursday morning.

A 28-year-old man is dead after a shooting in Kitchener, Ont., on Thursday morning.

Police were called to a residential street in the area of Gray Street and Casey Drive for a shooting just after 9:00 a.m. ET. People were asked to avoid the area.

The man's body was found outside a home and police said "investigators believe that this was a targeted" shooting.

"Residents in the area are asked to check the video from their security or doorbell cameras for any video footage in relation to this shooting," police said in a release.

Police were investigating a fatal shooting in Kitchener Thursday. One male has died. Briefly, six schools in the area of Gray Street and Casey Drive were put under a 'hold and secure' which means students are kept inside and no one is permitted to enter the school. The investigation is ongoing.

Six schools were placed in hold and secure as police investigated, which means students were kept inside the building and no one was allowed to enter the school. The hold and secure was lifted at 11 a.m.

The six schools that were placed in hold and secure were:

  • Grand River Collegiate.
  • Chicopee Hills.
  • Lackner Woods.
  • Stanley Park.
  • St. John Paul II School.
  • St. Daniel Catholic Elementary.

The Waterloo Region District School Board said in a notice on its website that students continued to learn in class and access to the school was restricted as a precaution.
