Late Wayne Wettlaufer's council seat to be filled in 90 to 100 days
It could take three months or longer for the Region of Waterloo to replace the late Wayne Wettlaufer on council according to Regional Chair Ken Seiling.
Wettlaufer, who was elected to regional council in October 2014, died on Sunday morning at the age of 71.
"I think we were all quite shocked and surprised," Seiling said, adding that Wettlaufer would be missed.
"Wayne was engaged, listened to people, brought forth a point of view, wanted to be an active member of the council and was very positive in his contributions. So, as an experienced voice, he brought a great deal to council."
According to legislation, Seiling said the vacancy created by Wettlaufer's death can be filled either through a byelection or by appointment.
"So, regional council has to turn its mind toward that in the next coming weeks," Seiling said. "We would need to make some decision...within 90 to 100 days."
In the meantime, Seiling said council would continue to operate as usual.
