Wilfrid Laurier University is calling out students who gathered at a street party on Ezra Avenue this weekend, saying they've hurt the university's reputation.

Monday night around 10 p.m., Waterloo Regional Police Service officers were called to the avenue in Waterloo for reports of large crowds.

Officers were engaged in crowd control when some furniture was set on fire on the street.

The Waterloo Fire Department was called to extinguish the blaze, police said.

No one was hurt, and an investigation is ongoing.

On Tuesday, officials with Wilfrid Laurier University released a statement condemning the student gathering.

The statement said the events damage the university's reputation and are dangerous.

The university said it will continue to work with a task force on combating street parties.

They also plan to "review the behaviour of any Laurier student accused of breaking the law, and will apply sanctions as appropriate."
