Mayor Berry Vrbanovic wants review of sidewalk shovelling rules

Kitchener Mayor Berry Vrbanovic says he will be asking city staff to review a bylaw requiring homeowners to shovel their sidewalks. 

Currently, the bylaw states that sidewalks must be cleared of snow and ice to the point where the pavement is visible. Failing to do so can result in a fine between $300 and $500. 

However, Vrbanovic says he's called for this review after receiving a number of complaints from residents who feel that requirement is unreasonable and difficult to meet, given heavier snowfall and persistent low temperatures. 

"We know that some people feel that down to the concrete is too tough," said Vrbanovic. "Others have concerns that we're not able to respond to chronic offenders who never clean their sidewalks fast enough."

Vrbanovic adds that it has been a number of years since the bylaw was last reviewed, and a report from city staff is expected before the beginning of next winter.
