Ontario Works cheques delayed by mail backlog: Region of Waterloo
Region officials offering to replace missing cheques, vouch for people whose rent will be late
About 400 people who rely on Ontario Works benefits have not received their cheques, according to officials with the Region of Waterloo.
The cheques are thought to be caught in a mail backlog due to the Canada Post labour dispute.
Officials with the Region of Waterloo said cheques were mailed on Monday, Nov. 26.
Postal workers were forced back to work on Tuesday, Nov. 27, after significant mail backlogs.
As of Friday, Nov. 30, about 400 people still hadn't received their benefit cheques in the mail said the region.
The Region of Waterloo is now offering to replace missing cheques as well as "confirm for landlords that a payment was delayed due to issues caused by the postal disruption."
Officials said some recipients reported received their cheques Monday, but anyone who is expecting a cheque and has not received it should contact their caseworker.
On Thursday, the Ontario Government said Ontario Disability Support Program and Assistance for Children with Severe Disabilities recipients would need to pick up their November cheques in person.
People who receive social assistance payments through direct deposit were not affected by the postal strike.
