Waterloo approves pedestrian island at Spurline Trail and Union Street crossing
A pedestrian island is on its way to the area where Spurline Trail and Union Street meet in Waterloo after the community shared concern around safety.
Construction of the pedestrian island will cost the city an estimated $7,500
Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to safely cross the Spurline Trail where it meets Union Street in Waterloo, after city council approved the construction of a pedestrian island.
City staff had received several complaints about the unsafe crossing since the trail was completed in 2016.
"It was determined that the installation of a concrete pedestrian refuge island would be beneficial," the city said in a release.
The pedestrian island is a solution the city could implement with the least amount of impact, Phil Hewitson, manager of active transportation for the City of Waterloo told CBC Kitchener-Waterloo in February.
The 2.75 metre wide pedestrian island will cost the city an estimated $7,500 and construction could start in the spring.
