A man who allegedly tried to steal a bike at knifepoint led police on a rooftop chase through a suburban-type area of Guelph on Sunday night.

It started when police got a call from a cyclist who said a man "brandished a knife and demanded that [he] give him his bicycle," said Guelph Police in a news release.

The cyclist was able to pedal away, unharmed.

Man on the roof

Later that night, police were called by people living in the area around Water and Maple streets in Guelph, that they had seen a man climbing on the roofs of homes in the subdivison.

The man, 26, jumped from house to house to avoid police but was caught after his fourth attempt. Subsequently, there were reports of vehicles being broken into in that same area.

Guelph police said the man is being held for a bail hearing and is facing robbery, weapons, trespassing and mischief charges.
