Flooding in Waterloo region closes roads, highways

As the rain and snow melt continues Wednesday, more and more road closures are in effect in Wilmot, Woolwich, Wellesley townships and in Cambridge.

As the rain and snow melt continues聽Wednesday, more road closures cause by flooding are in effect聽in Wilmot, Woolwich, Wellesley townships and in Cambridge.

A rainfall warning is still in effect for Waterloo region and Wellington County. Five聽to 10 mm of rain and possibly freezing rain is expected to fall Wednesday聽before a cold front passes through the region in the afternoon, according to Environment Canada.

Total rainfall amounts in Waterloo region since Monday night have been between 40聽and 60 mm, said Environment Canada in a release.聽

The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) Wednesday issued a flood warning聽for:

  • City of Cambridge.
  • Township of North聽Dumfries.
  • Brant County.
  • City of聽Brantford.

"An ice jam has developed in the City of Brantford through the dike reach," said GRCA in a release.聽"Levels are similar to those experienced during the 1996 ice jam."

Current road closures

The聽warm weather聽and snow melt has caused聽localized flooding across Southern Ontario, forcing some local townships and cities to close roads and聽evacuate residents.

Woolwich:

North Dumfries:

  • Main Street between Scott & Hall streets are closed.聽
  • Thomson Street at Inglis聽Street remains closed. The southbound lane of Blair Road聽by Langdon Road is closed.
  • Public Works crews are dropping off sand and聽sandbags at the Ayr Community Centre west parking lot.

Wilmot:

Wellington:

  • Wellington Road 18, between Salem and 8th line remains closed.聽
  • Sideroad 6 between Second Line and Fourth Line is closed聽due to flooding and road conditions.

Wellesley:

  • In Wellesley,聽Seignor Line and Manser Road between Deborah Glaister and Perth Line 7 remains closed.

Cambridge:

GRCA聽said an ice jam upstream of聽Parkhill聽Dam released at approximately 2:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, causing聽flooding in the Grand River between Cambridge and聽Brantford, similar to flood levels experienced in June of 2017.

As a result, Highway 24聽from Myers Road to Ainslie Street remains聽closed.
