Environment Canada has issued special weather statements for Waterloo region, as well as Guelph-Wellington and its surrounding areas Friday.

The statement said both areas could see significant rainfall with a risk of thunderstorms over the weekend.

The agency said total rainfall amounts between 20 to 40 mm is expected, with some areas possibly getting more than 40 mm.

The rainfall is expected Saturday evening through Sunday night.

"Localized flooding in low-lying areas, and water pooling on roads are possible," the statement said.

The frozen ground has a reduced ability to absorb this rainfall, the agency warned.

Flood watch

Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) issued a flood watch for the entire Grand River watershed Friday afternoon.

"The snowpack in the northern part of the watershed still contains a significant amount of water content. Warm temperatures combined with expected rainfall will result in snowmelt and runoff," the release said.

GRCA urges people to exercise "extreme caution" around all waterways and stay off ice due to unsafe conditions.
