City council approves $45K for temporary, leash-free dog park in Waterloo

During Monday’s council meeting, the Waterloo council approved the construction of a temporary, leash-free dog park in Waterloo Park West, near the Westmount Road entrance. The temporary park is scheduled for construction later this year. Council staff will determine the dog park's permanent location after engaging with community members.

Waterloo is getting a temporary, leash-free dog park in Waterloo Park West after city council approved funding for the new space.

During a meeting on Monday afternoon, council unanimously approved $45,000 of funding needed to construct the temporary dog park, which will be located near the Westmount Road entrance.

Robin Milne, Waterloo's director of parks, forestry and cemetery services, said several locations in the uptown area were candidates for the park's temporary home, but the location at Waterloo Park West was deemed immediately ready for use.

The temporary location will be constructed later this year, and is expected to remain in place for two years while staff work to determine a permanent location.

Staff will be engaging with community members starting this fall to find a permanent home for the leash-free dog park. They will be asking for the community's feedback on several evaluation criteria, including the park's size, conflicts with the park's other activities and overall accessibility among others.
