Waterloo MPP Catherine Fife says she plans to use her new role as the NDP's finance critic to push the current Progressive Conservative government to "invest in keeping people safe."

Fife, who along with her MPP colleagues returned to Queen's Park on Tuesday, said the NDP have a strategy and it starts with paid sick days.

"We want the government to look seriously at ensuring that when workers do go out to their workplace, they have options to actually not have to go to work sick," Fife said in an interview on CBC Kitchener-Waterloo's The Morning Edition with host Craig Norris.

"One of the reasons that I'm excited to be the finance critic is that, I want to push this new finance minister to invest more strategically in ensuring that we don't end up in a third lockdown," she said, referencing Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy who replaced Rod Phillips after he resigned.

"If we want to keep people safe, keep the economy open, there are ways to do that," Fife added.

Fife also discussed the upcoming provincial budget, set to be delivered on March 31.
