A 29-year-old Kitchener man appears in court this morning for allegedly opening fire on police with a pellet gun, striking an officer in the face and hand.

Waterloo Region Police say the man, who had a court order not to possess firearms, was pulled over by officers near Ottawa Street South and Nyberg Street at around 5:20 p.m. Tuesday.

When officers approached the man's vehicle, police say the man pulled out a pellet gun and opened fire, striking an officer in the face and hand.

The officer then returned fire, striking the man's vehicle, according to police.

Police say a nearby tow truck driver noticed the fracas and put his truck directly in front of the suspect's vehicle, in order to immobilize it.

The man was arrested by police without further incident.

Police say the 29-year-old officer who was struck with the pellets suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.

The 29-year-old suspect faces a number of charges and police note he was not hurt in the incident.
