Waterloo Region public and Catholic schools could be closed for the second consecutive weekday Monday, with Environment Canada forecasting extreme wind chills hovering around -40 in the morning.

According to Waterloo Region District School Board spokesperson Lynsey Meikle, the school board has implemented a new policy in the fall to cancel all classes in the event that the temperature or wind chill is forecast to be -35 at 7 a.m.

As of 11:45 a.m. Sunday, Environment Canada called for - 39 wind chill at 7 a.m. on Monday.

The decision to close is made jointly by the public school board, the Catholic school board and the Student Transportation Services of Waterloo, the group that runs school buses and taxis.

On Friday, almost all schools in Waterloo Region were closed and buses cancelled due to the extreme cold.
