Wayne Wettlaufer, Waterloo Region councillor and former MPP, dead at 71

Waterloo Regional Coun. Wayne Wettlaufer has died at the age of 71.

Wettlaufer's brother Larry Wettlaufer confirmed his death in an email to CBC News on Sunday.

The cause and timing of Wettlaufer's death are unclear. His Twitter account was active as recently as Saturday afternoon.

Kitchener-Conestoga MPP Michael Harris tweeted his condolences. "A dedicated father who loved his community and Province and served it proudly RIP," said Harris via Twitter.

Also on Twitter, former Cambridge MPP Rob Leone called Wettlaufer a "great public servant who loved his city, province and country."

Wettlaufer was elected to regional council in October 2014. He was the MPP for Kitchener Centre from 1995 until 2003.
