Joe Nowak wins close race for mayor in Wellesley township

Incumbent Joe Nowak defeated Bernia Wheaton in the race for mayor in Wellesley, after problems with the online voting system Monday gave voters until 8 p.m. Tuesday to cast a ballot.

Joe Nowak has been reelected mayor in Wellesley township.

Nowak beat challenger Bernia Wheaton by 23 votes.

Nowak was first elected mayor in 2014. Prior to that he served as a township councillor.

Wheaton is a business owner who was also previously the economic development officer for the Rural Oxford Economic Development Corp.

Two councillors will return to their roles after being acclaimed.

  • Ward 1: Shelley Wagner was acclaimed.
  • Ward 2: Incumbent Herb Neher was elected.
  • Ward 3: Incumbent Peter van der Maas was elected.
  • Ward 4: Carl Smit was acclaimed.
