Students at Wilfrid Laurier University have voted to keep the U-Pass program with Grand River Transit (GRT).

The U-Pass program provides post-secondary students a transit pass for the academic year, and costs $113 per term paid via tuition fees.

Laurier's student unions, Wilfrid Laurier University Student Union and graduate students' association held a vote between Jan. 24 to 26 to decide if they would continue to participate in that program.

The results show 88 per cent of undergraduate students and 75 per cent of graduate students supported the continuation of the program, according to a news release from the region.

"The results of the student-led referendum clearly show that students value the U-Pass program," said Neil Malcolm, acting director of transit services in the news release.

"The program provides an affordable, sustainable, easy-to-use, and unlimited transportation option for students travelling across the region."

According to a report that went before a planning and works committee on Jan. 10, Laurier's U-Pass programs would generate $1.8 million of transit revenue for the Fall 2023 term, representing annual revenue of $3.8 million in 2024.

The program will continue at the university until at least 2025.
