Transport Canada investigating train derailment in Goderich, Ont.

On Tuesday, Transport Canada said an operations inspector was deployed to the area to conduct an inspection for compliance with the Railway Safety Act.

Transport Canada has deployed an inspector to gather information after a train derailment in Goderich, Ont.

Emergency crews were called to the Goderich Harbour, near the grain elevators, early Monday afternoon after several train cars went off the rails and destroyed a transport truck and a shed in its path.

No one was injured in the incident, but police said the damage was significant. 

On Tuesday, Transport Canada said an operations inspector was deployed to the area to conduct an inspection for compliance with the Railway Safety Act.

"Transport Canada is committed to protecting all Canadians who live and work along rail lines by putting in place the necessary measures to reduce the risk of serious accidents," spokesperson Clay Cervoni wrote in a statement. 

The derailment involved the Goderich-Exeter Railway (GEXR), a freight railway that runs from Goderich to Stratford, Ont.
