Manitoba's Independent Investigation Unit is looking into the case of a man seriously injured by a police dog during an arrest in Dauphin.

The man was injured after 3 a.m. CT Tuesday, the police watchdog said in a news release Thursday afternoon.

RCMP responded a report about a man in a mental health crisis at a hotel on Main Street S. near Riverside Road in Dauphin, a city about 240 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg, the IIU said.

The man had already left when officers arrived at the building, the news release said.

He was found in a dense bush area, where police dog services were deployed, the IIU said.

The man was bitten by the dog and taken to hospital and admitted for treatment.
