'Dramatic increase' in animals, $32K water bill forces Winnipeg Humane Society to ask for help
The organization is hoping to raise $30K by the end of 2015
The Winnipeg Humane Society is asking for help following what they are calling "a dramatic increase in animal intake" and an unexpected water bill of $32,000.
"We've done great work, but it comes at a cost," said the organization's CEO, Javier Schwersensky.
He said the incoming animals, combined with building maintenance costs that were not accounted for in the budget — including the huge water bill, which was the result of a hidden broken pipe — has hit the shelter hard.
With the humane society's effort to work with other rescue initiatives in Manitoba comes the surge in animal intake.
By the end of November, the organization admitted more than 8,200 animals. That's 579 more animals than had been admitted by the same time in the previous year.
In mid-December, the Winnipeg Humane Society is hoping to raise $30,000 by the end of 2015. With what the organization calls minimum government funding, it needs the support of the community in order to continue accepting animals.
"These funds allow The WHS to accept more animals, nurse them back to health, re-train behaviour in dogs, and ensure pets find forever homes," the organization said by way of press release on Wednesday.
"Without donor support, The WHS adoption program would not exist."
