About Elmwood-East Kildonan

An incumbent councillor will face off against a red seal cook in the race to represent a northeast Winnipeg ward.

Newcomer to politics Ryan Kochie will go up against Coun. Jason Schreyer in Elmwood-East Kildonan. Schreyer is in his second term as the ward's councillor.

The area includes the neighbourhoods of Chalmers, East Elmwood and Kildonan Crossing.

People in Winnipeg will head to the polls on Oct. 26 to vote for councillors in 13 of the city's 15 wards, as well as a new mayor and school trustees. Councillors in the other two wards have already been acclaimed — meaning they automatically hold on to their seats — after no one ran against them.

In the 2018 election, a little over one-third of the people eligible to vote in Elmwood-East Kildonan — or just under 36 per cent — cast a ballot for their ward's council seat, data from the city clerk's office says.

Here's what you need to know before election day in Elmwood-East Kildonan.

Who's running?

Ryan Kochie is a red seal cook who's worked nearly 20 years in the culinary industry.

He also helps run two large Facebook groups: one for parents who want to connect and another for people who want to buy and sell items.

Jason Schreyer is the current councillor for the ward. He was elected in 2014 when he unseated former Winnipeg Jet Thomas Steen, who had been charged earlier that year with domestic violence offences.

Since taking office, Schreyer has been appointed to the finance and water and waste committees. He's also the son of former Manitoba premier Ed Schreyer.

What are they promising?

Kochie says he'd work to reduce crime by addressing its root causes, including poverty, mental health issues and a lack of after-school activities. He'd also advocate for better active transportation infrastructure and work to engage with constituents.

Schreyer says he'd push the city for more explanation around budgetary decisions, especially when it comes to construction costs. He would also work to improve 311 services and address crime by advocating to put more police on the streets.
