Elmwood house fire leaves woman dead
Woman found dead on couch in home on Martin Avenue W., emergency officials say
A woman is dead after a fire tore through a home in Winnipeg's Elmwood neighbourhood on Tuesday morning.
Emergency crews were called to a one-storey home on Martin Avenue W., between Brazier and Roch streets east of Henderson Highway, just before 6 a.m. CT after reports of a fire.
Heavy smoke was billowing from the eaves and front door when firefighters arrived.
Fire crews doused the blaze but found a woman dead next to a couch in the home, fire platoon Chief Barry Carpenter said, adding he believed the woman was 45 years old. Emergency officials tried to resuscitate the woman but were unable to save her.
A pet dog and cat were also killed in the fire.
Police later told reporters at a news conference they believed the victim was closer to 30 years in age and that a third, unidentified animal was also found dead in the home. The victim wasn't known to police.
The investigation continues.
