'Get the shot, not the flu': WRHA offers free vaccines in Winnipeg

It's time to get your flu shot again, Winnipeg

The Winnipeg Regional Health Authority is offering free influenza vaccines at 12 community clinics across the city between Oct. 21 and Oct. 24.

Despite not being the most effective last year, Dr. Bunmi Fatoye with the WRHA stressed the importance of getting vaccinated.

"The flu virus is constantly changing but antibodies made in response to vaccination with one virus, can provide protection against different but related viruses," said Fatoye. "This year's flu shot protects against four strains of influenza, providing additional protection to one more."

The flu shot is particularly important for:

• Pregnant women
• Kids between six months and five years old
• Seniors over the age of 65
• Those with a chronic illness
• Health-care workers
• First responders
• People who are overweight or obese
• People with aboriginal ancestry

To avoid spreading germs, the WRHA says to:

• Wash your hands regularly
• Avoid touching your face with unwashed hands
• Cover a cough with a tissue, your sleeve or elbow
• Avoid coughing into your hands
• Stay away from personal  care homes, homes for the elderly
• Don't go to school or work if you're sick
