Harvey Smith turfed but vows to not abandon city politics

Harvey Smith is still trying to get over the shock.

"I was stunned too because I've been very active. I mean I've done so many things," he said.

The longtime Winnipeg city councillor was defeated Wednesday by Cindy Gilroy in the Daniel McIntyre ward he has represented since 1998.

"I wish her well but I don't think anyone will be able to do what I could accomplish. I mean, I really worked hard and I used all my skills, you know, in doing so," Smith said Thursday.

He said he worked hard recently to save the Sherbrook Pool, institute fines for Winnipeg landlords who don't turn on the heat for tenants, and get more funding for back lane repairs.

While he might not be sitting in council chambers, Smith — who said he's been active in politics since age 12 — vowed to be a presence at committee and council meetings and make his voice heard on issues that concern him.
