Man dies after shooting involving homemade weapon
Dexter Cortavista Dejarisco's death is 3rd homicide of the year in Winnipeg
A man who was rushed to hospital in critical condition after being shot with a homemade weapon in Winnipeg has died.
Dexter Cortavista Dejarisco, 31, was found inside a home on Burrows Avenue near McGregor Street around 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 7. He had a serious gunshot wound to his upper body.
On Friday, police announced that Dejarisco died from his injuries on Jan. 15. His death is the city's third homicide of the year, less than three weeks into 2019.
Benny Lance Hansen, 34, had initially been arrested at the home and charged with aggravated assault and various firearms offences. He is now charged with second-degree murder.
At the time of the shooting, police said they are encountering many more incidents involving improvised and homemade weapons, which were not common five to 10 years ago.
