Hudson’s pint-sized younger brother growing at Toronto Zoo

Winnipeg’s most famous polar bear, Hudson, has a brand new brother just one province away.

The pint-sized cub is currently being hand-raised by zoo staff and shares both parents with Hudson.

The cub is about one month old, and the zoo has been tracking his growth in photos and videos.

The cub, who doesn’t have a name yet, was the only surviving bear in a litter of three. So far, Toronto Zoo officials said he is showing promise.

He began purring on Nov. 15, crawling on Nov. 17 and rolled over for the first time on Nov. 23.

Staff are still waiting for him to open his eyes, which typically happens around 40 days after birth.

Even though he’s still quite small, the bear needs seven feedings a day and exercise sessions where he crawls and explores with the help of zoo staff.

Hudson, his brother, was also raised at the Toronto Zoo and then moved to the Assiniboine Park Zoo in Winnipeg in January of this year.

Hudson is now over two years old and was the first polar bear for the zoo’s new Journey to Churchill exhibit, which has seen a number of new bears, mostly from Churchill, join its ranks in recent months.

The $26-million exhibit is slated to open in June 2014.
