An inmate in a federal prison in Manitoba has died.

Correctional Service Canada says Devon Earl Sampson was found unresponsive in his cell at Stony Mountain Institution on Saturday.

The government says staff immediately began performing CPR and emergency services were called.

But the inmate could not be resuscitated.

Sampson, who was 34, had been serving a sentence of five years, six months for robbery and obstructing a police officer since Dec. 14, 2011.

The inmate's next of kin have been notified of his death.

As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the police and the coroner have been notified, and Correctional Service Canada will review the circumstances of the incident.
