6 more charged with 2nd-degree murder in death of Stony Mountain inmate

More than eight months after a Stony Mountain Institution inmate was charged in the death of a fellow inmate, six more inmates have been charged with second-degree murder.

More than eight months after a Stony Mountain Institution inmate was charged in the death of a fellow inmate, six more inmates have been charged with second-degree murder.

On July 22, 2024, Headingley RCMP officers were called about a serious assault at the federal prison just north of Winnipeg. They found Dean Young, 37, seriously injured and took him to hospital, where he later died of his injuries.  

On July 25, the RCMP major crime services arrested Nukota Peters, 22, who has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with Young's death.

On Thursday, police confirmed six more inmates have also been charged with second-degree murder: Wallace Sinclair, 20; Jeremiah Zglobicki, 22; Brennan MacDonald, 22; Keewatin Lachose, 24; Daniel Chatkana, 25; and Randal Hastings, 31. 

Manitoba RCMP told CBC News the inmates were arrested on the new charges over the past few months, with the final arrest taking place on Thursday. 

The accused inmates have been transferred to various institutions across Canada and remain in custody, police said.
