Starting this weekend, visitors to the Manitoba Museum can experience some of the earth's most remote and thrilling places, in person and with their smart phones. On Saturday, the museum opens National Geographic Presents: Earth Explorers. The travelling exhibit features six eco-zones to explore and interact with as well as an "augmented reality" app for Android and iPhones to make the experience that much more immersive.

Installations will look like they're ripped from the pages of a National Geographic magazine, and include deserts, oceans and caves, said the museum. The hope is the exhibit will "ignite a renewed sense of curiosity" in natural spaces, according to the news release Thursday.

"Earth Explorers gives insight into what drives us to explore and why we are determined to learn more about the planet," Manitoba Museum Executive Director Claudette Leclerc said.

National Geographic Presents: Earth Explorers runs Oct. 3 until April 24, 2016 at the Manitoba Museum. Guests are asked to download the Earth Explorers app before arrival to see different 3-D animations related to exhibits and earn "virtual trophies" on their tablets or smartphones.
