New report calls for safer St. Boniface industrial park
City of Winnipeg commissioned report details safety measures after Speedway International fire
A new report has made a number of recommendations to make the St. Boniface industrial area safer for nearby residents.
The report was commissioned by the City of Winnipeg after a massive $15 million explosion erupted in the neighbourhood last year.
Speedway International, a bio-diesel company, exploded in October 2012, forcing evacuations of nearby homes and sending dark plumes of thick smoke into the sky.
The report has now been completed and is recommending a number of changes, including offering incentives to more hazardous industries to move to safer locations, extend the areas between homes and businesses and increase the number of inspections of certain sites.
The report also named several businesses in St. Boniface’s Mission Industrial Neighbourhood that are potentially noxious or hazardous.
