Local poet and storyteller Rob Malo has put together a simple show concept: give some of Winnipeg's slam poets a platform to share their work, and do it in the Steinkopf Gardens (the little space between the Centennial Concert Hall and the Manitoba Museum).
Set againstΒ a backdrop of the planetarium's dome and the muted hum of Main Street traffic, a rotation of poets step up to the mic in this open-air show.
On opening night the audience was treated to two pillars of the spoken word scene: Chimwemwe Undi and Steve Currie. Undi's piece on street harassment was particularly striking, while Currie brought his blend of off-handed humour and insightful, crystal-clear images.
Although you may not get to see these two during another performance, there is a strong common thread each night: a young poet by the name of Tazi Rodrigues will be warming things up with her intelligent poems that have a robust-yet-delicate feeling to them.
This isn't a high-production theatre piece, but it is a lovely way to enjoy the setting sun and some of Winnipeg's brightest wordsmiths.
