School-zone speeders will still get tickets on holidays, council committee decides
What constitutes a holiday would be too confusing, Coun. Marty Morantz says
The city council committee responsible for traffic safety has voted down Coun. Shawn Dobson's effort to stop police from handing out school-zone speeding tickets on holidays.
The St. Charles councillor wants the city to end the practice, calling it a cash grab. Last week at city council, he brought forward a motion to prevent the ticketing of motorists caught driving faster than 30 kilometres per hour on weekday holidays from September to June.

That motion was referred automatically to council's public works committee, where it was rejected on Tuesday.
"Not every a holiday is a school day and many holidays are school days. There [was] a potential for confusion," said committee chair Marty Morantz (Charleswood-Tuxedo-Whyte Ridge).
Council may wish to debate whether reduced speed limits should be enforced in school zones every day of the year, Morantz said.
