Police looking for evidence at Richmond West home after suspected fentanyl overdoses
1 man found in Kinlock Lane home died, another remains in serious condition
There was a large police presence at a home in the Richmond West neighbourhood of Winnipeg Tuesday after one man died and another was hospitalized after suspected fentanyl overdoses on Sunday.
Police were executing a search warrant at a home on Kinlock Lane, near Keslar Road, after two men were rushed to hospital Sunday night.
A 22-year-old man died and a 21-year-old remains in serious condition, police said.
Police said while test results are pending, they believe the dangerous drug fentanyl may be behind what happened.
Police investigators, emergency crews and hazardous materials units were all back at the home on Kinlock on Tuesday.
There are three rental rooms in the home said owner Yulin Tan, who also lives there with his wife. The rooms are rented to university students.
Tan explained that on Sunday night one of his tenants came to him to say he couldn't wake up his friends.
"He came to me and said they felt not good and they passed out," Tan said, adding he told his tenant to call 911.
"At that time I didn't know what had happened."
Tan said the renter had been staying in the house for about five months. He said the man who died and the man in hospital were his tenant's friends.
A neighbour said she believes they are foreign exchange students who needed an interpreter to speak with police.
"I guess the police brought them to the police station to investigate on them I don't know what was happening. And then all night there's been a police thing 24/7 in front of the house," said Beatrice Canuel-Desilets, adding she saw the victims being worked on by crews Sunday night.
"I got home from work and then saw all the fire trucks and like ambulances and everything and wondering what was happening. And then I actually saw the guy getting out of the house while they were pumping his heart and everything so it was pretty scary."
Police said the two victims did not live in the home and may have been visiting. So far no arrests have been made and no charges laid.
Neighbours say about 7 students live in the home. Some needed an interpreter to speak with officers. Police say victims lived elsewhere.
