A man is in stable condition after being shot in downtown Winnipeg early Wednesday morning.

Police say there was a dispute outside a bar on Portage Avenue, between Smith and Garry streets, after 2 a.m.

The people involved in the argument moved along Portage until they got to Fort Street, where a man intervened and was shot in the leg, said police, who were called just before 2:30 a.m.

The man was taken to hospital in stable condition.

No arrests have been made and police are still conducting interviews.

Many of the witnesses were inebriated and reluctant to talk, police said.
