It's going to be a difficult spring in Winnipeg for those living with asthma or allergies.

That's because snow mould — the fungus left beneath the ground after the snow melts — is back. And there is plenty of it out there.

"This is the time of year for people to stay indoors as much as possible, especially during the morning hours when the mould tends to really get released," said Dr. Allan Becker, an expert in allergies at the University of Manitoba and consultant at the Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg.

He said asthma cases tend to peak at this time of year but there are things people can do to ease their symptoms.

"If you are allergic, if you're sensitized to these moulds, which are the most common allergen in the prairies, you really shouldn't be out there cleaning up your lawn, unless you've got really good protective gear."

Becker also recommends allergy sufferers keep car windows rolled up when driving around and try to stay indoors as much as possible.
