A taxi driver is recovering in hospital in Winnipeg after he was stabbed Friday morning.

The 35-year-old man was stabbed in the upper body around 3 a.m. on Selkirk Avenue between McGregor and Powers streets in the North End.

He was sent to hospital in unstable condition but has since been upgraded to stable.

The cab driver picked up two passengers, a man and a woman, in the nearby area. After driving a short distance, the driver was attacked by the pair, who then got out and ran, police said.

Const. Jay Murray said police initially thought the assault was part of a robbery, but nothing was stolen from the driver.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call investigators at 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).
