A number of inmates at Stony Mountain Institution were sent to hospital after a fight broke out in the maximum security unit of the prison Sunday.

No corrections staff were injured in the incident, Kelly Dae Dash, a spokesperson for Correctional Service Canada, said in an email. She did not say how many inmates were taken to hospital with injuries, but that "several" were involved in the altercation.

CSC is investigating what caused the fight and will not be releasing any further details at this time, Dash said.

"CSC does not tolerate violence in its institutions. Disciplinary action is taken, and criminal charges can be laid against those involved in violent incidents," she said.

"In order to improve practices aimed at preventing this type of incident, CSC will review the circumstances of the incident and take the appropriate measures."
