Teghan's top 5 things to do in Winnipeg this weekend (Feb. 5-7)

Winnipeg continues to punch above its weight with a ton of options for art, music, movies, theatre, comedy and outdoor stuff this weekend.

My top picks are the retro cereal and cartoon party at Cinematheque Saturday morning and the comedy showcase at The Knndy Saturday night.

If you're going to try out First Fridays this weekend, stop by the Winnipeg Art Gallery first for a free viewing of their exhibit We Are on Treaty Land.

And if you have $15 for a ticket, try Middletown at the Black Hole Theatre or the tribute to female country singers with Keri Latimer and Jess Reimer at Times Change(d).

WHAT: ART — We Are on Treaty Land at the WAG

When: Friday, Feb. 5, from 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Where: Winnipeg Art Gallery at 300 Memorial Blvd.

Cost: FREE

If you haven't had a chance to check out the exhibit We Are on Treaty Land at the WAG yet, Friday night is the time.

The gallery is opening for a free viewing till about 10 p.m., and is holding speeches from a bunch of people including curator Jaimie Isaac.

The exhibit has paintings, prints and photographs from indigenous artists on treaty relations.

Absolutely everyone is welcome at this event, so you should go check it out if you have a spare hour or two before you head out Friday night.

This one also happens to fall on the Exchange District's First Fridays, so you can check out the exhibit and then check out the Exchange for free shows at a whole bunch of other galleries.

Friday night, the Winnipeg Art Gallery is opening their We Are On Treaty Land exhibit to the public for free.

WHAT: MUSIC — Dolly, Linda and Emmylou's Trio at Times Change(d)

When: Friday, Feb. 5, at 10 p.m.

Where: Times Change(d) at 234 Main St.

Cost: $15

Times Change(d) is hosting three amazing local artists for a tribute to Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris Friday night.

Keri Latimer (I just love her!), Jess Reimer and Vanessa Kuzina are doing a tribute to the 1987 album Trio.

After that, there'll be a whole night of music written and recorded by female country music legends.

The earlier show for this has already sold out, but the late show is open to whomever shows up.

Doors open at 9 p.m., so if you want to get into the 100-person-or-so venue, I'd aim to be there right on time!

WHAT: FILM – Cereal and cartoon party at Cinematheque

When: Saturday, Feb. 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Where: Cinematheque at 100 Arthur St.

Cost: $10

I find it deeply disappointing that Cinematheque does this only once a year, because it is just the coolest thing.

Saturday morning they're inviting everyone to come down to their cozy theatre in pyjamas and slippers for a morning of sugary cereals and retro cartoons.

There will be cartoons from the 1940s through the 1980s and tons of vintage commercials in between.

This year's collection is curated by film genius Kier-La Janisse.

Cinematheque is also really cool about you showing up late, so even if you sleep in, try to head down at some point!

Kids and adult-sized kids welcome.

WHAT: THEATRE — Middletown at the Black Hole Theatre

When: Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m.

Where: Black Hole Theatre at 162 Dafoe Rd. W.

Cost: $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors

There are a ton of options for theatre this weekend — the MTYP is doing The Power of Harriet T and the Master Playwright Festival's two-week-long tribute to Alan Ayckbourn is underway — and my top pick is the George Toles-directed Middletown at the Black Hole Theatre.

As with any Toles production, it will be thoughtful, honest and very funny.

It's a relatively new play (2010) from New York's Will Eno about small-town life and a connection between a man who has been there for 20 years and a woman who just arrived.

And it's the first production since the Black Hole Theatre moved to their new space, so go check it out.

WHAT: COMEDY — CMDY at The Knndy

When: Saturday, Feb. 6, at 8 p.m.

Where: The Knndy at 330 Kennedy St.

Cost: $5

CMDY at The Knndy is just getting off the ground, but this lineup was so impressive, I had to mention it.

Dan Verville (he tells banana bread jokes so we love him), Dana Smith, Jared Story, Dan Glasswick and Garrett Clark are all on the bill.

Host Jordan Welwood will also be there, and HUNKS is going to do some stuff as well.

With tickets at $5 and pitchers at $13, it's a very affordable night of curated comedy.

And if you're in the mood for dancing, these shows are usually done by 10 p.m., when DJs take over.

Tickets for both the comedy and the DJ thing together are $10.

And one more... 

WHAT: ACTIVITY — Soul on Ice at The Forks

When: Sunday, Feb. 7, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Where: The Forks at 1 Forks Market Rd.

Cost: FREE

Not forgetting about Sunday, this is the last weekend to catch Soul and Ice at The Forks.

DJ Co-Op and DJ Hunnicutt will spin hip hop, funk, disco, rock, reggae and other stuff at the ice rink on Sunday afternoon.

All you need is a pair of skates because this one is free!
