Teghan's top 5 things to do in Winnipeg this weekend (July 22-24)
Movies on the beach in Gimli, an 80s dance party at Good Will and comedy at The Park Theatre
If you have friends in from out of town, this is a pretty good weekend to show them what Winnipeg's got.
Our adorable nearby beach town is hosting movies on the waterfront all weekend, and in town, there's a grimy shoegaze show at the Windsor and an 80s dance party at The Good Will. They've already promised to play Paul Simon and Bruce Springsteen, which for anyone who knows me (and good music, frankly), is huge.
In addition to all of that, The Winnipeg Fringe Festival is heading into its final weekend, and The Park Theatre has a diverse comedy lineup for the very low price of $12.
Folklorama is also kicking off this weekend but more on that next week.
WHAT: FILM – Movies on the beach in Gimli
When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Where: Gimli, Man.
Cost: FREE
The Gimli Film Festival is back again, and their lineup of free beach screenings this weekend is potentially the best ever.
Raiders of the Lost Ark, a Prince and David Bowie Sing-A-Long and The Goonies are all on at sunset on the beach.
And yes, the fish fly apocalypse has ended, so you should be able to enjoy the movies with minimal disgusting bugs.
Bring bug spray though. And definitely some warm clothes 'cause it's right on the water.
WHAT: MUSIC – Holy Void EP release
When: Friday, July 22 at 10 p.m.
Where: Windsor Hotel at 187 Garry St.
Cost: $10
It's going to be 1,000 degrees this weekend so I feel like it's a good time to check out a shoegaze show in the basement of The Windsor Hotel.
Holy Void is doing their EP release and tour kickoff at 10 p.m. with Ultra Mega and Black Cloud.
If you haven't heard them, Holy Void sounds a bit like music you'd hear in a Tarantino movie. It's psychedelic/surfer/shoegaze rock that won't put you to sleep, basically.
It's going to be a very good excuse to hang out at The Windsor on a Friday night.
WHAT: COMEDY – TOKEN at The Park
When: Saturday, July 23 at 9 p.m.
Where: The Park Theatre at 698 Osborne St.
Cost: $12
There's a new comedy show at The Park this weekend called TOKEN, which is bringing in a lineup of diverse comedians for a showcase.
Keep an eye out for Burdett and St. Mars — both have had strong sets at the women's open mic in the Village recently and Burdett had a brilliant set at Empowherment.
Ash and Riley have been around a bit longer and are always reliably funny — and Rae has new material that I absolutely love.
It's a brand new show (first time ever!) so it might not be as tight as Empowherment or the Winnipeg Comedy Showcases that run at The Park, but you are getting a ton of comedy for $12.
WHAT: DANCE – Everything 80s at The Good Will
When: Saturday, July 23 at 10 p.m.
Where: The Good Will Social Club at 625 Portage Ave.
Cost: $5 before 11 p.m.
DJs Co-Op, Hunnicutt and Lambo are doing an Everything 80s dance party at The Good Will and the list of stuff they are going to play (Paul Simon! The Smiths! Whitney Houston! Tom Petty! New Order!) is the best.
I think this might be even better than Smithfits, if only because it's going to be pretty hard for dudes to turn Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen into a pseudo mosh pit at 1 a.m.
Can we all agree not to get in the way of each other's gentle swaying to Springsteen at last call? Please?
WHAT: THEATRE – Winnipeg Fringe Festival
When: Friday, Saturday and Sunday
Where: Various venues
Cost: $10 per show
Fringe continues this weekend with a ton of stage performances, food trucks and free outdoor concerts.

And if you're not into the theatre thing, there are shows at The Cube all weekend long. Saturday night, Adam Hanney & Co, Vikings and Mama Cutsworth are all doing sets. Sunday, The Revival is playing at 8 p.m. and then there'll be fringe performer karaoke at 9 p.m.
