People learn about Terry Fox on provincial holiday named in his honour

People from across Manitoba and the country celebrated Terry Fox Day by checking out a special exhibit in the national hero's honour at the Manitoba Museum.

The exhibit, Terry Fox: Running to the Heart of Canada, has an in-depth look at Terry's epic 143-day, 5,373-kilometre journey from St. John's, N.L. to Thunder Bay, Ont.

For the holiday named in his honour, the museum also had a special showcasing of prosthetic legs and the advances in the design since Terry did his courageous run.

"He is so inspiring because of his youth and how much guts and courage it took to undertake something so huge with just one leg," said Debra Fehr, director of marketing sales and programs at the Manitoba Museum.

"It's a tremendous story that I think is inspiring to all Canadians and, in particular, to the Manitobans that are here that are visiting today."

Alex Loewen biked to the museum all the way from Abbostford, B.C. The 25-year-old is biking across the country and it worked out that she was in Winnipeg for the exhibition about her hero.

"Terry Fox is one of my heroes. It's my birthday and that's just how I want to spend it," she said. 

As someone who is on their own cross-country journey, Loewen said "Terry's journey is just really inspiring."
