Thousands of Winnipeggers form 'living' Canadian flag
Organizers confident city will have largest living flag again this year
About 3,500 Winnipeggers donned red and white T-shirts and gathered outside the Manitoba legislature on Monday to create a giant "living" Canadian flag.
People of all ages stood together as the big group photograph was taken at around 11:30 a.m. CT.
Organizers from the Downtown Winnipeg BIZ say they hope the turnout will be enough to defend the city's title as home of the country's largest living flag.
Maralie White, who came to Canada from Jamaica 40 years ago, said she came to the legislature wearing red and white because she wanted to be part of the living flag.
"Oh, I want to show my colours, that I am a very proud Canadian, because it's afforded me a very comfortable life," she said.
Winnipeg is competing with Victoria, B.C., Ottawa and Calgary for the honour this year.
This is the third year the Manitoba capital has participated in the competition.
The city won the title in the last two years and Canada Post honoured the achievement by putting a photograph of the living flag on a stamp.
