A 50-year-old man has been arrested and charged after a woman was yelled at, spit on and assaulted on a Winnipeg Transit bus.

The man, who was arrested Monday after police received a tip from the public, is facing a charge of assault causing bodily harm.

Police first reported on the incident two weeks ago, saying the 21-year-old woman was talking on her cellphone on the bus Oct. 8 at about 1:30 p.m. in the area of Marion Street when she felt something on the back of her head.

When she turned around, a man started yelling at her.

He grabbed her hair, causing her to come out of her seat, police said, adding that other passengers tried to intervene as the man began hitting the woman in the upper body.

Another passenger pushed the suspect off the bus when it was stopped.

The woman eventually made her way home and contacted police.

On Oct. 14 police released photos of the suspect, asking the public to help identify him.
