Willis was sentenced to life in prison after a jury found him guilty of stabbing Tran to death outside her St. Vital apartment building in June 2012.
Willis' attorney filed an appeal, and now, a panel of judges has reserved their decision on whether his conviction will be overturned.
In the Court of Appeal, decisions are made by an odd-numbered panel of judges. Typically, judges will rule within six months of the hearing.
In 2014, first-degree murder charges against another man, Drake David Moslenko, were stayed.
Moslenko was Tran's boyfriend and was accused of arranging for Willis to kill Tran.
