Manitoba's police watchdog is looking for a person they say witnessed the interaction between Winnipeg police and a 24-year-old man who was fatally shot by officers at the Unicity shopping centre.

The shooting happened Sunday night outside a bus shelter in the parking lot, when officers fired at a man they said had stabbed an officer in the throat before guns were drawn.

Jordan Charlie, 24, from Taloyoak, Nunavut, was taken to hospital, where he later died.

The Independent Investigation Unit, which examines all serious matters involving police in the province, said the person was seen in video from the area of the shooting.

Based on the footage, IIU investigators believe the person witnessed the shooting, but the police watchdog hasn't been able to identify that person.

The IIU released stills of the person on Friday in hopes the person will come forward.

Anyone with information about the witness can contact the IIU at 204-948-7000 in Winnipeg or toll-free at 1-844-667-606.
