Members of the local army cadets held a parade in Winnipeg on Saturday commemorating the 99th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
Dozens packed the Minto Armoury building on St. Matthews Avenue to take in performances and displays detailing the sacrifices of Canadian soldiers who fought in the historic First World War battle, which lasted from April 9-12, 1917, in northern France.
Giselle Irakoze with the Sgt. Tommy Prince MM Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps said about 100 youth involved with the Army Cadet League took part in the event.
Irakoze said she learned a lot about the battle in the lead-up to the commemoration event. She said the experiences she's had with the cadets have been really fulfilling.
"The way we are together as a family, we collaborate in so many ways ... It's about the whole cadet corps — army cadet corps, air cadets, sea cadets — as a family."
