City of Winnipeg workers gathered at the city hall courtyard Tuesday to honour the National Day of Mourning — a day that commemorates those killed or hurt in the workplace.

City of Winnipeg workers gathered at the city hall courtyard Tuesday to honour the National Day of Mourning — a day that commemorates those killed or hurt in the workplace.

"It is important to honour all those who have suffered as a result of their occupations in service to fellow citizens," said Mayor Brian Bowman, who attended the city hall ceremony, where flags were lowered.

"The city works hard to prevent risks to our employees so that their families do not lose them to work-related accidents or illnesses." 

There will be a number of other ceremonies at city work sites today, according to a press release issued by the city.

The National Day of Mourning was proclaimed by Canada's Parliament in 1991 and is recognized in more than 80 countries across the globe.
