Winnipeg police officer shot man in Siloam Mission parking lot
Man in his 20s in 'stable but guarded condition': Police
A Winnipeg police officer shot a man after responding to an alleged assault with a weapon in a parking lot near Siloam Mission Friday night.
The man, who is in his 20s, was taken to hospital where he remains in "stable but guarded condition," Winnipeg police said in a news release on Saturday afternoon.
Police say they responded to a call about two men fighting outside on the 200 block of Princess Street around 11:10 p.m. Friday.
An assault with a weapon was in progress when police arrived, the news release says. According to the police statement, the suspect was "non-compliant" and an officer shot him.
The victim of the alleged assault, a man in his 40s, was also taken to hospital in unstable condition. He has since been upgraded to stable.
A large police presence remained on the scene Saturday morning.
The Independent Investigation Unit, Manitoba's police watchdog, has taken over the investigation.
No patrons or staff of the downtown charity were involved in or affected by the shooting, said Luke Thiessen, the communications manager, in an email.
"It seems entirely unrelated to us," he said.
A Forensic Unit truck could be seen outside of the building, and a number of evidence markers were visible in the parking lot. A lone shoe and a red backpack were also lying there.
Siloam Mission's drop-in centre was closed, but Thiessen said the charity hopes to reopen once the area is cleared.
